MRSA attacks school district twice in a year
May 1, 2009. FRANKFORT, IL — Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA) has been identified at
Grand Prairie
Elementary School, making it the second confirmed case in
the
Frankfort School
District 157-C in just over a year, according to the
Frankfort
Station.
The student who tested positive for the infection was out of school
prior to the diagnosis and there is no evidence the student contracted
the infection while in school, the story stated.
A
letter
was posted on the district’s website and also sent home to parents and
guardians to educate them about MRSA and to offer tips to keep
themselves and their children safe and healthy, the story noted.
Custodians at Grand Prairie Elementary School have been taking extra
precautions to ensure the school is clean and that surfaces are
disinfected to minimize the risk of contamination, the story added.
According to the story, washing hands thoroughly with soap and water or
using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer greatly reduces the risk of
spreading infections like MRSA.
