What is a
Certified Environmental
Hygienist™?
A
Certified Environmental Hygienist™ is an
environmental detective who is trained, certified, and experienced in the
fields of
mold and environmental hygiene, such as the environmental cleaning
and disinfecting of indoor building air and
surfaces like walls, ceilings, floors, heating/cooling equipment and
ducts, counters, and equipment to prevent the spread of
mold growth, infectious
diseases, and other
health problems caused by environmental exposure to germs, bacteria,
viruses, and mold.
What
is environmental hygiene? Environmental hygiene includes
services and actions aimed at improving or maintaining the
standard of basic environmental conditions
affecting the well being of people, including,
but not limited to: (1) clean and safe water
supply, (2) clean and safe ambient air,
(3) efficient and safe animal, human, and industrial
waste disposal, (4) protection of food
from biological and chemical contaminants, and
(5)
adequate housing in clean and safe surroundings.

Environmental Hygiene
concentrates on environmental health threats
and problems, such as
microbial pollution and the spreading
of infectious diseases in the environmental situation
and facilities of
workplaces, homes,
condominiums, and apartments.
“Microbial
pollution is a key element of indoor air pollution,
and it is caused by
hundreds of species of bacteria and fungi, in particular filamentous
fungi (mould), growing indoors when sufficient moisture is available.
Problems
of indoor air quality are recognized as important risk factors for human
health in both low-income and middle- and high-income countries. Indoor
air is also important because populations spend a substantial fraction
of time within buildings. In residences, day-care centres, retirement
homes and other special environments, indoor air pollution affects
population groups that are particularly vulnerable due to their health
status or age. Microbial pollution involves hundreds of species of
bacteria and fungi that grow indoors when sufficient moisture is
available. Exposure to microbial contaminants is clinically associated
with respiratory symptoms, allergies, asthma and immunological reactions”
noted the the World Health Organization in its report “WHO Guidelines
for Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mould,” published July 16, 2009
