What is a Certified Industrial HygienistSM
or
Certified Occupational HygienistSM?
A Certified Industrial HygienistSM
or Certified Occupational HygienistSM
is an environmental professional who is educated, certified, and
experienced in "occupational
hygiene [which] is the discipline of
anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and
controlling health hazards in the working environment with the objective
of protecting worker health and well-being and safeguarding the
community at large, according to the International Occupational
Hygiene Association. The term
"occupational hygiene" (used in the UK and Commonwealth Countries
as well as much of Europe) is synonymous with "Industrial
Hygiene" (used in the US, Latin America, and
other countries that received initial technical support or training from
US sources). (Source: Wikipedia).
Environmental Hygiene deals with environmental health threats
and problems (such as the spreading of infectious diseases and microbial
pollution) in both the
workplace and elsewhere, such as in the environment of homes,
condominiums, and apartments.
“Microbial
pollution is a key element of indoor air pollution. It is caused by
hundreds of species of bacteria and fungi, in particular filamentous
fungi (mould), growing indoors when sufficient moisture is available.
Problems
of indoor air quality are recognized as important risk factors for human
health in both low-income and middle- and high-income countries. Indoor
air is also important because populations spend a substantial fraction
of time within buildings. In residences, day-care centres, retirement
homes and other special environments, indoor air pollution affects
population groups that are particularly vulnerable due to their health
status or age. Microbial pollution involves hundreds of species of
bacteria and fungi that grow indoors when sufficient moisture is
available. Exposure to microbial contaminants is clinically associated
with respiratory symptoms, allergies, asthma and immunological reactions”
noted the the World Health Organization in its report “WHO Guidelines
for Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mould,” published July 16, 2009
